Mind Health for People of Color
The health of African Americans has often been portrayed in terms of deficits, disease, and death. Historically, little attention has been paid to the remarkable fact that African Americans, as a population, have demonstrated an enduring ability to survive numerous social, economic, and environmental challenges for over a century, even predating the founding of the United States.
While these inequities have undoubtedly had a devastating impact, it is important to acknowledge the considerable diversity in outcomes, suggesting the presence of significant individual and collective resilience among African Americans.
This Perspective aims to ignite discussions and promote research that delves into the concept of resilience within a population where "overcoming" and "bouncing back" from adversities, ranging from minor incidents to long-standing, legally enforced oppression, have been essential for survival.
